Mirabilis jalapa or Night Beauty is originally from Central America, but can easily be grown as an annual in our climate. The plant forms long rhizomes that are kept cool and dry in the winter, so that new plants are available every year. The trumpet-shaped flowers are relatively small and only open around four o'clock, hence the English name 'Four o'clocks'. They spread a wonderful scent during the evening, and attract many bumblebees and moths.
Sow indoors in March-April or outdoors in May.
Blooms from June to September. Keep the soil slightly moist.
