Our Mission and Vision

At Silene, we are committed to bringing nature closer to home. We offer a unique selection of extraordinary annual and biennial flowers and plants, carefully chosen to increase biodiversity in every garden. Our mission is to inspire and support people in creating sustainable and ecological gardens where both animals and people can thrive. With every flower that blossoms, together we contribute to a healthier planet and a more colorful future.

We dream of a world where every garden is a haven from nature — a place where bees buzz, birds sing and people enjoy the beauty of blossoming flowers. Our vision is to make gardening accessible and meaningful by promoting ecological choices. By embracing biodiversity, we are not only building a healthier environment, but also a connection between people and nature. Together, we create gardens that give life and inspiration, now and for future generations.

The Green Power Behind Each Seed

Introducing...

Sofie Van den Berg

Ever since I was a little girl, I've spent hours in the garden with my grandpa. Together, we admired nature, amazed at how beautiful and smart everything works. My fascination for flowers, vegetables, fruit and herbs originated there, fueled by the simplicity and beauty of nature.

Now that I am a mother of two little girls myself, I see the same wonder in them. They enjoy everything around them to the fullest — from a butterfly that flutters by to flowers that are in bloom. Their enthusiasm has made me realize how valuable it is to reflect on the essentials: nature connects, calms and inspires.

This is what prompted me to take over Silene.
I want to bring the beauty and power of nature to everyone. Sowing a flower garden yourself and watching it grow is magical. It connects you to the Earth, helps you slow down and lets you experience that nature has its own rhythm, unhurried and pure. My mission is to inspire and help you create your own piece of nature. Together, we not only provide a beautiful garden, but also a world full of biodiversity where people and nature reinforce each other.

FAQs

Find answers to frequently asked questions about growing plants, seed storage, and our shipping options here. Perfect for beginners and experienced growers alike.

Which seeds are best for beginners?

As a beginner, it's nice to start with flowers that are easy to sow and care for. Some recommendations include Agrostemma (Bolderik), Borago (cucumber herb), Calendulas (marigold), Centaurea (cornflowers), Cosmos (cosmea), Eschscholzia (nightcaps), Gomphrena (Common Amaranth), Lupinus (Lupine), Tagettes (marigolds), Tropaeolum (nasturtium) and of course Helianthus (sunflowers).

These varieties require minimal care. They give great results and offer a good start to your gardening adventure!

How long can you keep seeds and what is the best way to store them?

The germination rate is different for each species. Some flower seeds last “forever” and others only 2 years. The “wilder” the flower, the longer the seeds last, the more cultivated the flower, the faster the germination rate declines. We test our seeds annually for germination. If they fall below our standard limit of 70%, we will remove them from the range.
This way, we can guarantee that the seeds will germinate for at least 2 years after purchase.

Store seeds in a cool, dry place with a temperature that is as constant as possible. In particular, temperature fluctuations are detrimental to germination. So definitely don't leave your seeds in the garden house or conservatory. The best spot is in a dry basement or dark shed or even in a bag in the fridge.

How many seeds are in a bag?

How many seeds are in a bag varies by species. Because flower seeds lose germination over time, we choose to offer seeds in smaller quantities. Each bag is designed to account for approximately 2 m² of flowers, unless otherwise stated, for example when it comes to flower mixtures. This helps you to always work with fresh, germinating seeds, which is important for a successful garden.
Remember that each seed is the start of one plant with many flowers, so you can go a long way with a few seeds. So don't underestimate what's in a bag.

Do you still need larger quantities? Please feel free to contact us via the contact form so that together we can find a solution that suits your needs.

Do you also sell plants?

We are still starting up and starting in the spring of 2025, we will be offering a small range of plants. This plant material is only available during the 2025 plant fairs and can be pre-ordered online and picked up at the fair. Please note that we do not ship plants. Keep an eye on our website for updates and stock market dates!

When will my order be shipped?

Orders are shipped by us twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays. We ship the orders with Bpost, the delivery times they indicate for packages within Belgium are 2 business days. Parcels abroad take 2 to 10 business days to get to you.
